This presentation will define both and discuss the correlation between communication and behavior. Individuals with autism often have difficulty communicating which often results in challenging behaviors in an effort to have their needs met. In order to eliminate a challenging behavior an appropriate and functional one needs to replace it. Prior to intervention potential communicative alternative behaviors need to be assessed along with their response effort. Common behavioral difficulties will be presented along with the various possible functions. FCT procedures will be discussed focusing on the two basic components and three steps involved. Programming for generalization will also be addressed and a case study will be presented.
