Parents And Professionals Honored For Their Outstanding Work With Autism

Milestones Organization will honor those who have made outstanding contributions to the education and training of individuals with special needs. A total of four awards will be presented, two for professionals and two for parents. The Professional Appreciation Award honors those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty and built self esteem and a sense of self worth in people with disabilities. The Parent Recognition Award honors individuals who have been a trail blazer for others and developed resources or services for others. The 2008 awards will be presented to the following individuals:

Kriselle Fox (2008 Milestones Professional Appreciation Award)
For 18 years, Ms. Fox has taught a class of students with special
needs (MH) for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District at East High
School. She is a role model for any educator. Her day does not start
with the school bell, but starts and ends as the needs of her
students' dictate. She promotes her students' independence both
academically and vocationally. She is a team player and assists other
professionals, making it easier for all to achieve the objectives for
their students.

Stacie Mamula (2008 Milestones Professional Appreciation Award)
Mrs. Mamula, a Revere district Speech Language Pathologist, worked
jointly with the district parent mentors to create the Revere Gaming
Club and continues to volunteer her time for this important program.
This club assists middle school students with Autism or other social
disabilities by helping them to interact more easily with their peers.
She has also met with multiple representatives from other districts to
teach them how to form similar clubs in their schools. From this work,
she has helped form three clubs in other school districts. She
constantly plans and implements new projects and stays at school long
after her staff has left. Mrs. Mamula consistently goes beyond her job
duties to help her students.

Sherri Appleton (2008 Milestones Recognition Award)
Several years ago, Ms. Appleton created a program that networks with
local facilities to allow special needs children to participate in
recreational and social activities such as rock climbing and bowling
with their friends and siblings. She contacts families, organizations
and professionals with information and resources. Her work with the
Westside parent mentors helped start similar programs in their area.
She is being commended for her dedication to the community of young people with Asperger's Syndrome and their families.

Sarah Taub (2008 Milestones Recognition Award)
Sarah Taub has brought a unique program of integration to Cleveland.
For 25 years, Ms. Taub has run the Cleveland chapter of YACHAD, a
national youth group that brings teens with special needs together
with typical teens. Sarah's program has helped train hundreds of young
people to be sensitive and inclusive when it comes to a person with
special needs. She also finds new positive integrative experiences for
persons with disabilities on a daily basis. Despite her busy life as a
parent with a special needs child of her own, she always finds time to
help others overcome any obstacles they may face.
