Feb. 2012 - Highlights from the Ohio ETech Conference
By Teresa Kammerman, MD, Pediatrician, Pediatricenter of Greater Cleveland
This week I was fortunate to be able to attend the Ohio ETech Conference. This annual conference is a chance for professional educators to meet and share new innovations, technologies, and pragmatic classroom strategies for all learners. The conference had over 500 sessions and workshops that highlight new technologies. I would like to share just some of the useful information that I picked up at the conference.
- Ohio Center For Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) www.ocali.org presented several sessions. The OCALI website has lots of useful information for both parents and professionals. There are over 32 leaning modules, Autism Internet Modules (AIM) that were developed to make comprehensive, up to date, and useable information on autism. The modules are applicable to educator, other professionals, and families. The modules are free, and available 24/7. Educators can take a pre and post test and even earn continuing education credits. Recently 2 new modules were added to showcase how assistive technology can improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. The new modules are called Assistive Technology Internet Modules (ATIM). These modules are written by experts in assistive technology.
- Infohio.org This site is created by The Information for Ohio Schools. It is a great resource for any child, but there are some interesting things on site that might be useful for children with special needs. Once on the site, click on the core collection, go to Leaning Express Library. To use the site, you need a user name and password, which is given to anyone who lives in Ohio. Currently the user name is learn, and the password is infohio. In the Learning Express Library there are modules that are for GED preparation, workplace skills, and occupation practice tests. There are even modules on skill building, such as how to lean personal finances.
- For Mac users there is a new app that allow you to write books, called ibookauthor this program allows you to write a book and import it to your iPad. I think this is a great app for anyone who owns an iPad and would like to write their own social skills stories or other books. It is also a great tool for educators. You can even publish the books on iTunes.
- For those with handheld devices, such as the iPad or android tablets, one can become over whelmed with apps. Ask yourself if the app or technology adds anything new for the student. Does the technology just replace technology that the child is already using? Some useful hints. Apps that allow the user to incorporate photos or modify the program are more useful. The cost of apps vary. Many are free, but some apps can cost up to $200. A costly app does not mean it is the most useful. A free app that allows you to modify it may do the same job, just as well. http://momswithapps.com is a good resource for learning about apps. Here are some useful lists of apps from presentations at ETech.

For the past six years, school personnel including intervention specialists, speech language pathologists and paraprofessionals from across Northeast Ohio participated in the Milestones School Team Training, a week long intensive training utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques.
Topics such as “How Motivation Impacts Performance”, “Strategies to Promote Independence”, “Effective Shadowing”, “Fostering Peer Interaction”, “Discrete Trials” and “Behavior Plans” are presented by behavioral consultants with extensive experience applying effective strategies for students with autism in public and private school settings.
After lecture and hands-on presentations, participants break into small groups and work with students on the spectrum in classroom situations. Randi Kottler of Gross Schechter Day School enjoyed this aspect of the Milestones Training: “What is unique about the Milestones training is that unlike many classes which are just theory, here you can be hands-on with students and actually use the techniques.”
Participants in the workshops not only learn and practice ABA techniques, but receive crucial feedback on their application of these techniques from the instructors and their peers. The interactive dialogue and sharing of best practices is difficult to replicate in a classroom-only situation. Kim Boughambouz of South Euclid- Lyndhurst Schools said, “It is one thing to hear the techniques, another to try them, but it is so much more helpful to do them while being observed and critiqued by a professional.”
