Ohio's Employment First Initiative
Ohio Governor John Kasich officially launched Ohio's Employment First Initiative in
March of 2012, by signing an Executive Order to make community
employment the priority and preferred outcome for working-age Ohioans
with disabilities.
Ohio's Employment First Initiative is
a statewide movement to support community employment or "integrated
employment" for individuals with developmental disabilities. Employment First seeks
to raise the expectation that people with developmental disabilities
can succeed in the workplace if they have the right training and
support. The initiative realigns state programs so that fundamental
policies create real opportunities for real jobs in the community.
Beth Thompson, Teen/Adults Services Manager for Milestones Autism Organization, was asked to join the Realizing Employment First for Youth Leadership Team as
a representative for those affected by autism spectrum disorders and as
an expert in the field of transition to employment for students with
disabilities. The leadership team is charged with assisting in reviewing
agencies policies and making recommendations that would increase
community employment opportunities for Ohioans with developmental
disabilities.
Milestones is honored to be involved with Ohio's Employment First Initiative. For more information, see Ohio DODD page - Ohio's Employment First Initiative.
